Tulsa baby's death ruled a homicide

(TULSA, Okla.)  February 7 - Tulsa police say the weekend death of a 2-month-old baby is a homicide. Investigators say Dacari Ackerson died of blunt force injuries to his head and chest and the medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide. No arrests have been made. Officer Jason Willingham says the baby wasn't breathing when officers and an ambulance arrived at the home shortly before 2 Sunday morning. The child was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. The child's father told officers the baby had been in a swing before being placed on his stomach on a bed and later stopped breathing. Ackerson is the third infant homicide victim in Tulsa this year and the 13th homicide overall in the city. .

Marilyn Vecchio—a voice of reason for parents

Strollerherder. Mentor. Nurturer. Teacher. Coach. Mother. Wife. Rock. Marilyn Vecchio embodies all these descriptions and more for many Big Bear Valley residents. During spring and summer months she speed walks alongside strollers on the Alpine Pedal Path along the shore of Big Bear Lake, facilitating discussion about pragmatic parenting. A sun visor is one of many hats Vecchio wears.

Vecchio, the education coordinator at the First-Five funded Mothers on Mountain Project, has taught and mentored an incalculable number of parents in Big Bear Valley. Whether it's potty training, play time, practical advice, picky palates or prenatal classes, Vecchio is always on hand to help mothers and fathers of young children, and those with little life changers on the way.

"Marilyn is just a rock," says Jill Zamoyta, a first-time mom and a frequent M.O.M.

Warning issued after tampered formula found

A public warning has been issued after two cans of powdered baby formula were found to have been tampered with at a Zellers store in Saskatoon.

Consumers are being cautioned in a bulletin by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to inspect cans of powdered infant formula for obvious signs of tampering.

Both police and the food agency are investigating after two half-empty cans of Enfamil brand baby formula were found to have puncture holes, which were concealed by the label.

The first suspect can was purchased in January and was reported to the manufacturer, Mead Johnson, and a company official spotted the second can with unexplained puncture holes on Feb. 1.

But there have been no illnesses reported by consumers of the infant formula and a company spokesman says there's no indication that anything was put into the cans and this appears to be an isolated incident.

Heart disease treatments tend to favor men over women

Women are more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer in the United States. In fact, about 50 percent of the women in this country will die of heart attack.

That was the message of Dr. David Lorah, a family practitioner from Glenwood Springs who spoke at the second annual Women Connecting in Health luncheon hosted by the Valley View Hospital Foundation.

"Heart disease is the number one killer of women," Lorah said.

Even more dramatic than the statistics was the story of retired nurse Mary Trotta, who lives 15 miles up the Fryingpan River.

About three months ago, Trotta was out on a walk with a friend and her baby, pushing the stroller, when she felt some tightness in her chest. "It was just a little discomfort," she said.

Smith's Bahamas home claimed for ex-boyfriend

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- The attorney for a U.S. developer who claims ownership of the waterfront mansion where Anna Nicole Smith lived in the Bahamas said Saturday he has retaken control of the residence on behalf of his client.

The South Carolina developer, G. Ben Thompson, is a former boyfriend of Smith's who was embroiled in an ownership dispute with the 39-year-old celebrity before she died Thursday in Florida. Thompson's attorney, Godfrey Pinder, said Smith's death meant her claims to the mansion were no longer legitimate.

"We changed the locks and have put a chain on the gate," Pinder said. "We have physical control of the house." (Watch how millions of dollars may be wrangled over)

Wayne Munroe, an attorney for the former Playboy playmate, said she bought the mansion in July for $900,000.
